Cooperative Diversity for the Cellular Uplink: Sharing Strategies and Receiver Design

In this paper, we propose and compare data sharing schemes and practical receiver designs for cooperative diversity in the cellular uplink. Specifically, we present new multi-user decode and forward (DF) protocols and an amplify and forward (AF) protocol, and we compare their performance in asynchronous uplink environments with low-complexity joint linear multipleaccess interference suppression and space-time decoding. The system under consideration makes use of codedivision multiple-access, but the schemes can also operate under frequency or time division multiplexing. Simulation results show that the DF schemes provide full diversity and near ML performance with linear reception, and they significantly outperform the Sendonaris et al. protocol.
